Stone Coated Metal Tiles vs Asphalt Shingles: Which Roof Wins?

Choosing a roof is a 30-year decision. Below we put stone coated metal roof tiles head-to-head with asphalt shingles on the factors that actually decide the job — so you can quote and specify with confidence.

Lifespan & Durability

Stone coated metal roof tiles last 50+ years. A Galvalume (AZ) steel base resists corrosion, and the kiln-fired stone granule surface shields the metal from UV and abrasion.

Asphalt shingles typically last 15–25 years and degrade faster in high heat and UV, curling and shedding granules over time. Over a building's life you often re-roof with shingles two to three times versus once with metal.

Wind & Fire Resistance

Interlocking stone coated tiles carry a UL 790 Class A fire rating and, correctly fastened, resist very high wind uplift — a real advantage in typhoon and bushfire zones.

Standard asphalt shingles are more prone to wind lift at the edges and, unless specifically rated, offer lower fire performance.

Weight, Shipping & Cost

Stone coated metal tiles are lightweight — roughly one-seventh the weight of concrete tiles — so they cut structural cost and ship more square meters per container.

Shingles have a low upfront price but higher lifetime cost once replacement, waste disposal and repeated labor are counted. For export buyers, metal's shipping density and long warranty usually win on total cost.

The Verdict

For hot, wet, windy or high-value roofs, stone coated metal is the stronger long-term buy. Asphalt shingles can still suit very low-budget, short-horizon builds in mild climates. For most export markets we serve, stone coated metal delivers the better cost-per-year.
